INSIDE AFRICA
A federal judge in Manhattan again allowed a lawsuit to proceed against several corporate giants for their alleged role in aiding South Africa’s oppressive apartheid regime. Daimler AG, General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and IBM are accused of ‘aiding and abetting’ human rights violations under the apartheid government.

What Is the True Unemployment Number? So, the true unemployment rate -which I define (as I think most would) as ALL people who want work but just can't find it- probably lies somewhere between 11.6% and 13.2%. If you consider individuals working part-time for economic reasons as unemployed, you get an unemployment rate north of 17.4%.
And that IS a depression. As a side note, I was at the local shopping mall with my husband over the weekend and it was almost a ghost town!
Hopes that low interest and higher spending would halt slide
Some 12 percent of minors held in government custody are sexually abused, and in some facilities the rate reaches a stunning one in three children, says a report released Thursday by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
INSIDE IRAN
The inauguration of the Dauletabad-Sarakhs-Khangiran pipeline on Wednesday connecting Iran’s northern Caspian region with Turkmenistan's vast gas field may go unnoticed amid the Western media cacophony that it is ‘apocalypse now’ for the Islamic regime in Tehran.

Mexico: Sex Slaves (Part I)
Smugglers bring thousands of young women from Mexico into the U.S. and force them to provide sexual services for perverted gringos with plenty of disposable cash. The transaction signals a cannibal capitalism, hardcore neoliberalism, that both countries share in dog-eat-dog cultures.
Killing Organizers in Honduras The bodies of slain activists are piling up in Honduras. While it’s being kept quiet in most Honduran and international media, the rage is building among a dedicated network of friends spreading the word quickly with the tragic announcement of each compañero/a. Now that the world heard from mainstream news outlets such as the New York Times of a ‘clean and fair’ election on Nov. 29 (orchestrated by the US–supported junta currently in power), the violence has increased even faster than feared.
African leaders must not forget that under the Barack Obama administration, US policy towards Africa and the rest of the developing world has not changed an inch. It remains militaristic and materialistic.
African leaders do not need prophets from Mars to know that US's fascination with oil, the war on terrorism and the military will now be centred on Africa, after that escapade in Iraq.
My comment: Omigod NO comment!!!

Going prorogue Did Canada’s prime minister suspend parliament to shut down investigations into the torture of Afghan detainees?
Here we are again. A year after Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper prorogued parliament in order to save his political skin from a potential minority coalition, he has chosen to suspend it again.

By Uzi Mahnaimi in Tel Aviv. A general who was once in charge of Israel’s nuclear weapons has claimed that Iran is a ‘very, very, very long way from building a nuclear capability’.
Pakistan’s government reported US drones killed only civilians in 39 of 44 attacks on their country in 2009; with over 700 innocent civilians killed, according to Pakistan's most widely-read English newspaper. Pakistan has repeatedly publicly denounced the US attacks, making the US guilty of War Crimes as they do not have explicit permission from Pakistan’s government.
In parallel with the escalation of the war in South Asia – – counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan and drone missile attacks in Pakistan – – the United States and its NATO allies have laid the groundwork for increased naval, air and ground operations in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden.
Taped in late 2005 before Peak Moment began, this conversation feels eerily prescient about the effects of the 2008 financial collapse.
William Stewart reflects on the shadow side of the fossil fuel bonanza, which enabled hyper–individualism and mobility that have shredded our connections to community and place, along with increased violence and dysfunction. Likening our oil–dependent culture to an
addict who must first bottom out, he suggests there may be a silken lining after collapse: the possibility of more communal and connected ways of life.
Permaculture began as a foresighted response to the needs of energy descent. Initially, permaculturalists focused on food production. As the movement has evolved, it has begun to merge with the Transition Culture movement. There is an emerging awareness of the social side of descent culture among permaculture activists. Transition Culture spurns individualist survivalism and emphasizes the need for
neighbors to work together to make our communities more resilient. The Transition movement is rooted in community.
A film released this week in Britain recounts the 16-year battle by Ecuadorians for damages against Chevron for oil pollution.

It certainly took a lot of work to do this, and it really takes the headache away for those who search for certain passages. – Luc Majno |
