| Frederick C. Weyand, Vietnam Commander, Dies at 93 Frederick C. Weyand, who served as the commander of American forces in Vietnam in the final year of the war, a duty he carried out despite having become convinced as early as 1967 that the war was a hopeless venture, died on Wednesday at his home in Honolulu.

The French sale, the first by a NATO member to Russia, comes despite objections from the U.S. and other NATO members and was disclosed while Mr. Gates was visiting Paris. "I understand that, for some Central and Eastern European countries, the wounds are still there. France wants a new relationship, and that means it needs to go through new exchanges. We cannot, on the one hand, enlist Russia in building this security, and at the same time consider that Russia has not profoundly changed since 1991," said French Defence Minister Morin. Patrick Cockburn: Where war goes, propaganda follows: The largely mythical US success in Iraq is now to be replicated in Afghan towns like Marjah and skirmishes there will be heavily reported.
Dubai Stock Market Falls on Debt Fears Dubai’s stock market fell 3.5% after a report said the government’s investment vehicle Dubai World may offer only 60 cents on the dollar to creditors.
For the world’s biggest economy, the US, the day of reckoning still
seems reassuringly remote. The worse things get in the eurozone, the
more the US dollar rallies as nervous investors park their cash in
the safe haven of American government debt. This effect may persist
for some months, just as the dollar and Treasuries rallied in the
depths of the banking panic in late 2008.
Yet even a casual look at the fiscal position of the federal
government (not to mention the states) makes a nonsense of the phrase
safe haven. US government debt is a safe haven the way Pearl Harbor
was a safe haven in 1941.
We draw knowledge and inspiration from the wild places that remain.
Because the habitat of humans has transitioned from one dominated by
flora and fauna to one of steel and concrete, the need to experience
and appreciate wilderness is greater than ever.

AS U.S. RUNS AN OCCUPATION DISGUISED AS RELIEF
The battle-stretched US military Saturday vowed to keep up US assistance in Haiti as long as needed on Saturday as it pointed to a likely 45 to 50 day armed mission. Webmaster’s Commentary:
Don’t bet on that; the battle for the exploitation of oil and mineral rights in Haiti (which will, of course, still leave the Haitian people impoverished beyond belief) has just begun.
My comment: The Rand Corporation has been working closely with the
CIA for decades. Gee, do ya think they’re expecting massive civil
unrest when most of the American population is unemployed and
starving? Utah delivers vote of no confidence for ‘climate alarmists’…
In news from Latin America, Laura Chinchilla is set to become Costa Rica’s first female president. She won Sunday’s election in a landslide. Laura Chinchilla: “Costa Rica is my beloved fatherland. I defend her, I love her, I adore her, and I give my life to her.” Laura Chinchilla is seen as a protégé of Costa Rica’s outgoing president Oscar Arias, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Chinchilla promised to pursue the same economic policies of Arias that recently brought the country into a trade pact with the US and opened commerce with China.
THE COMING SECOND ECONOMIC COLLAPSE
Those of us here warned you that things were going to get worse & MUCH
WORSE and to our credit, many of you listened to our point of view. I
implore you to listen once again. Those MSM pundits and clueless
politicians are correct; a massive storm has passed us all. But what
they are not telling you is that we are sitting in the center of a
massive eye wall. Having passed through the relatively calm part of
the storm over the past 18 months, we are now poised to suffer the
wrath of the back end of this shit storm. The second storm wall is
approaching and you had better start getting your ducks in a row as
this is when the REAL economic shit storm will get real for a LOT
more people in this country and this world.
POVERTY AND THE AMERICAN SUBURB …it was revealing to see the latest study on poverty
from the Brookings Institution. Their study showed what many in the peak oil community have been
forecasting for years: poverty growth in the US between 2000 and 2008
was strongest in the suburbs.

WHAT DOES THE PREZ STAND FOR?
…the president is exceedingly anxious to be liked by the rich and
powerful and to preserve good relations within his class, at almost
any cost. As a result, it is next to impossible to discern what he
stands for. This is the presidency of, One never knew, now did one,
now did one, now did one – – in which orienting substance is lost in
an unending quest for future cordiality.

Details of British Resident’s Brutal Torture by CIA Officers Released Three senior UK judges on Wednesday ordered the British government to publicly disclose previously highly classified information that reveals how Binyam Mohamed, a British resident, was brutally tortured by the CIA while in Pakistani custody in April and May 2002. In one short session, the Court of Appeal brought an end to a transatlantic game of cat and mouse that for the last year and a half has prevented two high.
