HOT GLOBAL ISSUES

CNN won't stop telling aid workers and the outside world about pillaging (the incidence of which -- for the first four frustrating days at least -- did not compare with what happened after Hurricane Katrina) and about how dangerous it is to distribute food, because of the likelihood of "stampedes".

The disaster planners have an agenda that goes beyond just saving lives. They want to use the crisis to rebuild Haiti along lines they support. (ie. Support of property rights etc) So far they have not spoken about how policies backed by the United States through the Caribbean Basin Initiative were responsible for uprooting peasants from the countryside to move them to the city to be a cheap labor reserve.

Why is the Pentagon so worried about "securing" the airport? Do they expect the Japanese to invade? How about just fixing the airport? Are they going to turn Haiti into an open-air prison and arrest escapees? Will black paramilitary helicopters start mysteriously hauling away bullet-riddled bodies and dumping them in the ocean like some claimed happened to New Orleans during Katrina? Why the heavy-handed military presence?

No, Mister! You Cannot Share My Pain!

Haiti’s vulnerability to natural disasters, its food shortages, poverty, deforestation and lack of infrastructure, are not accidental. To say that it is the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere is to miss the point; Haiti was made poor--by France, the United States, Great Britain, other Western powers and by the IMF and the World Bank.

Tricky business – How Counterfeit Goods Strangle Africa’s Economy

African leaders must not forget that under the Barack Obama administration, US policy towards Africa and the rest of the developing world has not changed an inch. It remains militaristic and materialistic.

African leaders do not need prophets from Mars to know that US’s fascination with oil, the war on terrorism and the military will now be centred on Africa, after that escapade in Iraq.

There is a widespread consensus that the decade we've just brought to a close was singularly disastrous for the country. We don't have a definitive name for this era, though Paul Krugman's 2003 book The Great Unraveling captures well the sense of slow, inexorable dissolution; and the final crisis of the era, what we call the Great Recession, similarly expresses the sense that even our disasters aren't quite epic enough to be cataclysmic. But there is simply no alternative other than to give in and let the field turn hard and barren.

From Jason Miller:

Bite Club protested KUMC’s primate torture and murder yesterday.

‘I just sent this email message and link to my blog post about our protest to the University of Kansas Medical Center officials (whose contact info is listed at the bottom of the Bite Club post--please contact them and tell them to stop torturing primates!)

Here’s the message I sent the monkey torturers:

Rather than having your entourage of gun-toting thugs patrolling and videoing us, why didn’t you have them attempt to incarcerate and torture Saylor and I against our wills rather than inflicting your sadistic savagery on voiceless, innocent monkeys? We caged ourselves and waited for you to come for us’.

HAITI

By David Swanson
What Bush Did to Haiti If a group of dedicated scholars, attorneys, journalists, and activists had tried to generate a comprehensive list of impeachable offenses committed by George W. Bush as president, and only 35 of them had been introduced into Congress, one of the many discarded ones, in rough and overly detailed form, might have read something like this.

Go home US military: Haiti doesn't need anymore pain!
d
The most terrible earthquake rocked Haiti. Haitians need humanitarian help, emergency rescue. But US sent a bipartisan military invasion. It’s been five days since the earthquake, victims still await help. The time for rescue is over. The survivors need relief from suffering: water, food, medicine, medical treatment and Haiti needs to rebuilding. Pentagon guns don’t heal or rebuild. Go home, Haiti doesn’t need more pain.
